Introduction to Solid Phase Extraction (SPE)

A solvent that dissolves interfering substances in a sample without dissolving the analyte is an excellent rinse solvent, but not as an elution solvent.

C18: Reversed phase extraction, suitable for non-polar to moderately polar compounds such as antibiotics, barbiturates, pyridazines, caffeine, pharmaceuticals, dyes, aromatic oils, fat-soluble vitamins, fungicides, Herbicides, pesticides, carbohydrates, substituted hydroxytoluene esters, phenols, phthalates, steroids, surfactants, theophylline, water-soluble vitamins.
C8: Reversed phase extraction, suitable for non-polar to moderately polar compounds such as antibiotics, barbiturates, pyridazines, caffeine, pharmaceuticals, dyes, aromatic oils, fat-soluble vitamins, fungicides, weeding Agents, pesticides, carbohydrates, substituted esters of hydroxymethyl acids, phenols, phthalates, steroids, surfactants, water-soluble vitamins.
C2: Relative to C18 and C8, because of the short chain, the retention effect is much smaller, suitable for non-polar compounds. Silica gel: Extraction of polar compounds such as ethanol, aldehydes, amines, drugs, dyes, herbicides, pesticides, ketones, nitrogenous compounds, organic acids, phenols, steroids.
Amino: Normal phase extraction, suitable for polar compounds. Weak anion exchange extraction, suitable for carbohydrates, weak anions and organic acid compounds. Cyano: Reversed-phase extraction, suitable for moderately polar compounds, normal phase extraction, suitable for polar compounds such as aflatoxins, antibiotics, dyes, herbicides, pesticides, phenols, steroids. Weak cation exchange extraction, suitable for carbohydrates and cationic compounds.
Strong anion exchange (SAX): Strong anion exchange extraction, suitable for anions, organic acids, nucleic acids, nucleotides, surfactants. Capacity: 0.2 meq/g.
Strong cation exchange (SCX): Strong cation exchange extraction, suitable for cations, antibiotics, drugs, organic bases, amino acids, catecholamines, herbicides, nucleic acid bases, nucleosides, surfactants. Capacity: 0.2 meq/g.
Acidic Alumina: Polar compound ion exchange and adsorption extraction, such as vitamins. Basic alumina: adsorption extraction and cation exchange.
Neutral alumina: Adsorption extraction of polar compounds. Adjust pH, cation and anion exchange, suitable for vitamins, antibiotics, aromatic oils, enzymes, glycosides, hormones. Magnesium silicate: Adsorption extraction of polar compounds such as ethanol, aldehydes, amines, drugs, dyes, herbicides, pesticides, PCBs, hydrazines, nitrogenous compounds, organic acids, phenols, steroids.
